St. Hilda’s Secondary School
Design & Build
This project transforms an existing courtyard into a welcoming and engaging garden space for students. The original courtyard was largely open and under-utilised, with limited biodiversity and visual interest. An overgrown tree at the centre posed potential safety concerns, while the existing hardscape paths divided the space without clear engagement points and the surrounding building facades appeared visually plain.
To improve safety and spatial clarity, the large central tree was removed and a new secondary path was introduced to integrate with the existing main walkway. This enhanced circulation and created a series of pocket spaces at key intersections for gathering and interaction.
Gentle grass mounds were formed across the open areas to introduce an undulating landform that softens the landscape and enhances visual interest. Colourful, butterfly-attracting plants were added to enrich biodiversity, alongside a small edible garden that allows students to participate in hands-on learning. A feature green wall integrated with the school’s crest was also created, serving as a distinctive photo spot and backdrop for group activities.
